We have entered into an era when pharmaceutical companies are working hard to artificially engineer treatments and cures for a host of human maladies with very limited success – basically via a process of trial and error. Several decades with a relative lack of success has ultimately persuaded these companies to reassess their approach and to reallocate their resources in new directions.

One of these new directions involves sending scientists out to rainforests and other wild areas where they are interviewing practitioners of traditional medicine in hopes of discovering starting points for developing new medical treatments. What they are discovering is that nature and the ingenuity of our ancestors has actually already done much of the work for us. In fact, this is a return of sorts, because it was just this type of intuition combined with a bit of luck that led Alexander Fleming to accidentally discover penicillin in 1928.

In this same vein the Bedouin living in the harsh desert developed their own brand of traditional medicine, elements of which have held up to the scrutiny of modern medicine and science. One of the primary elements of traditional Bedouin medicine is camel milk, which has been used for thousands of years in a host of applications including to treat digestive problems, skin problems, eye infections and as a treatment for damaged hair. In recent decades scientists have gone into the laboratory and found, often to their surprise, that many Bedouin remedies based on camel milk had a remarkable degree of efficacy. Further studies have verified that these surprising outcomes are a direct result of the unique qualities of camel milk including its naturally high level of vitamins A, B1, B2, B12, C, insulin, carotene and iron. In addition camel milk is naturally antibiotic and antibacterial.

While some of these advantages are related to drinking camel milk, here at Nature Yards we focus on using camel milk to develop treatments for skin and cosmetic problems. And we are only scratching the surface of what is possible with a variety of exciting new products in development!
